About "The Bulls of Durham" project & it's creator Elena Rodriguez
The Bulls of Durham is a book in the making for all to see.
It's a project ambitious and audacious enough that it could have only been conceptualized and brought to fruition in Durham, North Carolina.
I could go on about it being a lofty mission to capture the jenesequa that is THE Bull City, but let's cut the bull and get to the meat of the matter. The Bulls of Durham is a book about the bulls (physical, sports team, metaphorical and human) that make THE Bull City.
It was a beautiful summer night. I was eating at Dos Perros on Mangum, enjoying my company and food. Looking around I got memorized by the fire sign at Pompieri Pizza for a quick minute and then when I looked back at my friend, I saw the Bull City Burger & Brewery and the idea hit me. I wanted to find out the history of every bull in the city and compile it all into a book.
I was hopeful that I would get 1 interview every week or every other week. I started in August 2016 and by the end of 2016 I'd already interviewed 52 Durhamites!
The interviews continued, as does reading the lengthy list of Durham history books. The interviews have grown to include over 100 key figures in our community. As the project grows I share bits of interviews and experiences in the form of blogs. I'm also very socialBULL and share photos and mini updates on social media. Grateful for this project and hopeful I can give something back to the city that gave me a home the moment I showed up.
